Flags Lowered at Town Facilities Recognizing the Passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair
The Town of Stouffville has lowered flags at Town facilities to honour the passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, C.C., O.M., M.S.C. This half-masting will remain in place until sunset on November 10, 2024. Mayor and Council extend heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and to Indigenous Peoples and communities across Turtle Island.
Justice Murray Sinclair, one of Canada’s first Indigenous judges and a former member of the Senate, was a tireless advocate for the rights of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. His legacy is marked by his leadership as Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), where he courageously brought national awareness to the painful truths of the Indian Residential Schools system. Through interviews with thousands of Survivors, the TRC’s final report laid out 94 Calls to Action to guide Canadians in the path of meaningful reconciliation.
In honouring Murray Sinclair’s memory, the Town of Stouffville reaffirms its commitment to learning, understanding, and supporting actions that move our community toward truth and reconciliation.
