Mayoral Decisions

Strong Mayor Powers

On September 8, 2022, the Ontario government passed Bill 3, the Strong Mayors, Building Homes Act, 2022 that provides mayors in municipalities prescribed by the Minister with new executive powers within their respective municipalities. The Town of Stouffville was prescribed by the Minister as a municipality that will have strong mayor powers effective November 1, 2023.

The Municipal Act, 2001, is legislation in Ontario that outlines the legal framework for the governance, administration, and financing of municipalities in the province, including their powers and responsibilities.

In Stouffville, the mayor has additional powers and duties, known as "strong mayor powers." The Ontario website outlines differences in the role of head of council and the municipal council, the municipal budget process, accountability and transparency rules.
