Stouffville Sounds the Call for a New Town Crier

Hear ye, hear ye! The Town of Stouffville seeks an enthusiastic and community-minded individual to take on the historic and symbolic role of Town Crier. This tradition, which dates back centuries, once served as the primary means of sharing public announcements. Today, the position remains a cherished symbol of civic pride and community heritage.

The selected Town Crier will serve as a ceremonial ambassador, representing Stouffville at official events, community festivals, and civic celebrations. With bell in hand and voice raised, the Crier will add a touch of tradition and pageantry to Town functions.

“Reintroducing the Town Crier is a meaningful way to celebrate our shared history and foster a strong sense of community,” says Mayor Iain Lovatt. “It’s a unique opportunity to honour our heritage while uniting residents through storytelling and ceremony.

The Town Crier will be responsible for making public announcements at sanctioned Town events and serving as a ceremonial ambassador for the Town of Stouffville. This individual will work closely with Town staff to prepare and approve official cries that align with the spirit of each event. Additionally, the Town Crier is expected to uphold respectful and inclusive behaviour at all times, reflecting the Town's core values and commitment to community representation.

Applications are now open and applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Individuals of all backgrounds, identities, and abilities are encouraged to apply and showcase their vocal talent. Applications must include a short video demonstrating the applicant’s public speaking skills—specifically, why Stouffville should have a Town Crier and what makes the community exceptional.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews and may be asked to perform a live audition. The appointed Town Crier will begin duties on January 1, 2026, subject to operational requirements. The successful candidate must complete a Police Vulnerable Sector Check and adhere to all applicable Town policies. The chosen Town Crier will be outfitted in a custom ceremonial uniform and receive an honorarium of up to $200 per event.
