Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire & Emergency Services Reminds Residents of Open-Air Burning Restrictions
Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire & Emergency Services (WSFES) is urging residents to be mindful of the open-air burning restrictions in place within the community. Adhering to these regulations is crucial for maintaining safety and minimizing the risk of fire incidents.
According to the Ontario Fire Code, property owners must obtain approval for open-air burning activities. In line with this requirement, the town of Whitchurch-Stouffville has implemented an open-air burning by-law that outlines the minimum conditions for such activities, including recreational fires like campfires.
It is important to note that non-recreational fires, such as burning brush or yard waste, requires a burn permit. Residents are requested to obtain the necessary burn permits from WSFES, which can be accessed conveniently on the Town's official website. Furthermore, WSFES reminds residents that leaves and garden waste, which may produce excessive smoke, should be disposed of through the Town's curbside collection service for yard waste.
To ensure the safety of all residents, WSFES emphasizes the following guidelines for recreational fires:
- The fire must be contained within a maximum diameter and height of 0.75 meters.
- Only clean wood products should be burned.
- The fire must be supervised at all times until fully extinguished.
- There should be a means of extinguishment readily available.
- Maintain a minimum distance of 3 meters from combustible materials.
- Fires should not be lit when wind speeds exceed 20 kph, change frequently, or cause reduced visibility on nearby highways.
- Fires emitting excessive smoke, sparks, or causing a nuisance are strictly prohibited.
Fire Chief William Snowball emphasizes, "In the event the Fire Department is requested to attend an open-air burning complaint where the by-law requirements have not been met or a fire is out of control, the fire will be extinguished, and the property owner may be charged."
Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these regulations and guidelines to ensure the safety of their properties and the well-being of the community.
