Stouffville Responds to U.S. Tariffs with Strong Support for Local Businesses

Mayor Iain Lovatt and the Town of Stouffville is deeply concerned with the United States erratically threatening unpredictable tariffs on Canadian goods, which poses a direct threat to key sectors of our local economy, including manufacturing, agriculture, and small businesses. These tariffs create challenges for our business community and we continue  to assess the impact. Stouffville remains committed to supporting local businesses and encouraging residents to do the same. Choosing to Buy Canadian – Shop Local is more important than ever.

Engagement and Consultation

The Town’s Economic Development team is actively working with  local businesses to better understand their challenges. To further engage with the business community, the Greater Stouffville Chamber, in partnership with my office and Uxbridge Mayor Dave Barton, will host a Tariff Town Hall on March 27 at 7 PM. This forum will provide us an opportunity to listen, learn, and explore how municipal leaders can best support local entrepreneurs.

Advocacy

Stouffville is working closely with York Region, Provincial and Federal partners, and industry leaders to ensure our local businesses receive the necessary support. We are monitoring the tariff situation closely and aligning our advocacy efforts with all levels of government.

Additionally, the Town has created this information page to keep residents and businesses informed about key developments and policy responses. We will continue to push for fair trade policies and stand in solidarity with municipalities across Ontario in advocating for countermeasures that protect our local economy.

Community Initiatives

To support local businesses, the Town will be launching a Shop Local Stouffville campaign to encourage residents to Buy Canadian-made products and support businesses impacted by the tariffs. The campaign will spotlight local businesses through our social media, e-newsletters, and our community magazine, On the Road.

We will also work with business organizations such as the Greater Stouffville Chamber and Village of Stouffville Advisory Committee to provide additional promotional opportunities.
