Mosquitoes In Stouffville Test Positive For West Nile Virus

York Region Public Health has confirmed that a mosquito trap near Highway 48 and Aurora Road in Whitchurch-Stouffville has tested positive for West Nile virus.

West Nile virus is an infection that can be spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. There are currently no confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Whitchurch-Stouffville.

York Region Public Health is conducting an environmental scan within a two-kilometer radius of the positive mosquito trap. The scan will focus on identifying and treating standing water containing mosquito larvae on public property, including catch basins, ditches, parks, stormwater management ponds, field pools, sewage lagoons and other areas where water may collect.

Residents can help reduce the risk of mosquito bites and West Nile virus by taking the following precautions:

Remove standing water around your home

  • Empty standing water from bird baths, flowerpots, swimming pool covers and other outdoor containers
  • Keep eavestroughs clear and ensure they drain properly
  • Make sure window and door screens fit tightly and are in good repair

Protect yourself while outdoors

  • Use an insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin and follow the directions on the label
  • Wear light-coloured clothing, including long-sleeved shirts and pants, particularly during times when mosquitoes are most active

As part of its 2026 West Nile Virus Control Plan, York Region Public Health applies larvicides to catch basins and other stagnant public water sources, monitors mosquitoes for West Nile virus each week and investigates reported human cases.
