For the first time, the Town will be offering internet voting, giving electors the option to vote online anytime between October 17 at 10 AM and October 26 at 8 PM.

Instructions on how to vote online will be included on your Voter Information Letter which will be received in the mail in late September. If you have not received your VIL, please contact elections@townofws.ca to ensure you are on the Voters' List or check your status and register online: Register to Vote

In general:

• Eligible voters receive a Voter Information Letter (VIL) in the mail containing a unique Personal Identification Number (PIN) on the front page.
• Use the link or QR code on the VIL and log in using your PIN from the VIL and your date of birth, once entered click “log in”.
• Once authenticated, voters select their choices and submit their ballot.
• After submission, the system securely records the ballot.
• Voters then receive a confirmation screen that can be used to verify their submitted ballot.

Common Misconceptions

"Online voting allows people to vote more than once. Someone can vote online and then show up at a voting place to vote again."
Fact: There are safeguards to make sure that a person can only vote once in a Stouffville municipal election. 

"Online voting enables coercion."
Fact: Differences between federal, provincial, and municipal election processes are shaped by various legislative and operational factors. Practices applied in one jurisdiction reflect these factors rather than assessments of suitability elsewhere. 

"Online voting results can be counted instantly, so any delays on Election Night means votes are being rigged."
Fact: Our online voting system has been designed with multiple technical and process safeguards to protect ballot integrity and vote secrecy before the counting process can begin. In addition, the Town of Stouffville is running internet voting simultaneously with in-person, paper ballots. The results from the two methods will need to be combined before they can begin to be released to the public.

"Online voting can be easily hacked, so the results can’t be trusted."
Fact: Online voting has been used in Canadian elections since 2003. However, there has never been a documented or verified case of a threat actor successfully tampering with an online voting system and altering an election’s outcome. 

"Online voting is vulnerable to foreign interference, so the results can’t be trusted."
Fact: There has never been a documented or verified case of a foreign government or attacker successfully tampering with voting infrastructure and altering the outcome of a Canadian government election.

"Canada’s federal and provincial elections don’t allow online voting, therefore it is not safe."
