Stormwater Management Master Plan

The Town is developing a Stormwater Management Master Plan (“SWM Master Plan”) to understand the stormwater system needs through to the year 2051, and recommend solutions where needed. It will consider opportunities to improve water quality and reduce urban flooding and recommend improvements to the reliability, efficiency, and capability of the Town’s stormwater system.

Background

According to the June 2021 Census, the Town has a population of 51,400. Most residents live within the community of Stouffville. By 2051, the population will be about 103,500 residents and 28,400 jobs (2.4% growth every year). This growth increases the demand on the existing stormwater management systems.

The Town of Stouffville is approximately 220 km square and supports a diverse range of land uses. There are many environmental features through the community, including the Oak Ridges Moraine. Protection of these environmental features is important as the community grows.

Project Goals

  1. Help us understand the current performance of the stormwater network in the Town. It will also consider future stormwater needs as the community grows.
  2. Identify and rank different stormwater management solutions over the short-term and long-term. It will recommend solutions to improve existing conditions and to use in new developments.
  3. Help the Town schedule and budget for additional projects between now and 2051. It will provide cost estimates and suggest funding opportunities for these projects.

How To Get Involved

The Town of Stouffville invites you to attend an upcoming public information centre discussing the Town’s Stormwater Management Master Plan. This plan is a comprehensive strategy to manage stormwater, which is the rain and melted snow that runs off streets and properties, into creeks and streams, and eventually enters our rivers and Great Lakes. We want your feedback as we continue to shape this important Stormwater Management Master Plan Study.

Town staff and their consultants will share project goals and objectives, details on the field investigations that have been completed so far and information on the existing conditions impacting stormwater management. Town staff and project team members are seeking input on the project and will be available to answer questions about the project and receive feedback.
