*Consultation has concluded*
Thank you to everyone who participated in this public consultation. Your contribution helped influence Council on their final decision.
On Tuesday December 3, Whitchurch-Stouffville Council decided to maintain the Town's name as the "Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville" however we will brand the municipality as "Stouffville."
Please follow the details of that project on the Branding & Corporate Identity project page.
"Whitchurch-Stouffville” or just “Stouffville?”
That is the question Council will be answering in December when they decide if its time to quell confusion about our town’s name.
And they want your opinion.
The Town has set up a series of open houses and launched an online survey to gauge exactly what the public thinks of the name.
Geographically speaking, “The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville” is the name of the lower-tier town (or “municipality”) bounded by Davis Drive in the north, Highway 404 in the west, York-Durham Line in the east and approximately 200 metres north of 19th Avenue to the south.
"The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville” has been the name of the town since 1971 when the Township of Whitchurch amalgamated with the Community of Stouffville.
Whitchurch Township originally extended to Yonge Street in the west and contained parts of Aurora and Newmarket.
Stouffville, geographically speaking, is the primary urban area within Whitchurch-Stouffville. It has the largest population and land area of all the settlement areas in the Town. Stouffville is roughly located south of Bethesda Sideroad and east of Highway 48 in the southeast part of Whitchurch-Stouffville. It was designated a ‘Community’ when the amalgamation occurred.
We have launched this online survey to see if you prefer ‘Stouffville’ or ‘Whitchurch-Stouffville’ as the town name.
We just want to see what the public thinks. We certainly are not taking a side in this, but if we are going to be doing a complete rebrand, we want to know what name we are branding.”
Along with the online survey, the community was also able to offer their opinion at two Public Open Houses. The dates and locations are to the right.
Paper surveys were also available throughout the town at various locations and a display was in the lobby of the Leisure Centre until October 25 for more information.
Town Council decided on the name in early December.

In 2020, the Town will be undergoing a branding exercise. This was approved by Council in early 2019. Before we start the exercise, we are asking residents and business owners what name we should brand - "Whitchurch-Stouffville," "Stouffville," or “Whitchurch.” Council felt that it would be very important to ask the public what they think of the name and receive community feedback to ensure the new brand accurately reflects the community’s vision.
It is important to note that a potential name change will not affect the cost of the project.
A community brand is a clear and consistent vision and message that conveys what a community represents (i.e., what a community stands for, and the values it holds). Our brand is central to our marketing endeavors. It directly addresses the needs of specific target audiences.
The reasons to brand are important:
Branding, or more accurately, developing a corporate identity, is much more than just a new logo and some colour changes. A corporate identity reflects how we make people feel. It is a culmination of what we do, how we do it, and why we do it. It ultimately dictates our reputation and influences how the public perceives us.
Other than our visual identity – such things as logos, colours, fonts, insignias – a brand also consists of non-visual and influential aspects, such as how we talk about our town, how we interact with the public, how we take photos, how staff give presentations and how we interact with the media. All of these help reflect a positive, professional image to the public when they think of the Town.
In February 2019, Council approved $50,000 towards the Branding and Corporate Identity project. This will cover costs of Phases 1 through 3 ("What Are We Branding?," "What Is Our Brand?", "What Is Our Brand Identity?"). Additional funds to cover costs of the implementation, if needed, will be approved by Council at a later date. These implementation costs are currently being analyzed.
The implementation will be a gradual one and will see the new brand rolled out when resources need to be replaced. For example, staff will not receive new business cards with new colours and logos until they have run out of the old ones first. This process will be ongoing. Budget consideration may also affect the timing of the roll-out as well.

Phases 1 through 3 ("What Are We Branding?" "What Is Our Brand?", "What Is Our Brand Identity?") are expected to be completed by summer of 2020. The implementation of the new brand – printing new signs, new decals on vehicles, new business cards for staff – will all take some time to complete. The implementation will be a gradual one and will see the new brand rolled out when resources need to be replaced. We are looking for your opinion now. Please fill out the online survey or a hard copy at one of our facilities.
Contributions to this project are closed for evaluation and review.
The final outcomes of the consultation will be documented and presented to Council for their final decision. The results of this consultation will be made public at this time.
