FIRE PREVENTION & PREPAREDNESS

Fire Safety Plans

Fire safety plans are in place to protect building occupants from fire and are unique to each building in the Town of Stouffville. Larger buildings or building complexes may require a consultant to help create a plan. Fire safety plans should be reviewed annually and any time there is a change in use or features of the building.

The Fire Safety Plan is required to be prepared, approved and implemented in buildings containing:

  • Assembly occupancy
  • Care, care and treatment or detention occupancy
  • Residential occupancy where occupant load exceeds 10 persons
  • A retirement home
  • Business and personal services occupancy where occupant load exceeds 300 persons
  • Mercantile occupancy (retail) where occupant load exceeds 300 persons
  • High hazard industrial occupancy where occupancy load exceeds 25 persons
  • Medium hazard industrial occupancy where occupancy load exceeds 100 persons
  • Low hazard industrial occupancy where occupancy load exceeds 300 persons

The Fire Safety Plan is also required for buildings and premises:

  • Containing 4 storeys or more, counting storeys below grade
  • Outdoor tire storage facilities
  • Buildings and open areas where quantities of flammable and combustible liquids exceed 500L
  • Laboratories where flammable and combustible liquids are used
