Safety Cameras Effectiveness

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) is being used successfully by municipalities across Ontario, North America, and around the world to improve speed compliance, reduce collisions, and lessen their severity.

A 2022 study by the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute evaluated ASE in the City of Toronto. The results showed that when ASE systems were in place, speeding significantly decreased by about 45% in 30, 40, and 50 km/hr zones.

Lowering vehicle speeds also helps reduce pedestrian fatalities. At 30 km/hr, the fatality rate in a collision is 10%, but at 50 km/hr, it jumps to 40%, and at 60 km/hr, it rises to 80%.

ASE is one part of a broader road safety strategy that includes engineering solutions, education, and police enforcement.
