Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority

LSRCA plays a vital role in protecting and managing the natural environment in the northern part of the Town of Stouffville, which falls within the Lake Simcoe watershed. LSRCA is dedicated to protecting and restoring the Lake Simcoe watershed, working in partnership with municipalities, government agencies, and local communities. LSRCA focuses on environmental restoration, water quality improvement, and sustainable land management to ensure a healthy ecosystem for future generations.

LSRCA’s Flood Management Program maintains a flood forecasting and warning system, monitoring watershed conditions and weather to issue timely flood alerts to the Town’s authorities and residents, to mitigate flood risks and protect infrastructure and natural resources from flood damage.

LSRCA offers the Town’s community various conservation programs, educational initiatives and landowner support services, supporting both the community and local ecosystems.

Toronto and Region Conservation Authority

TRCA is essential in protecting the southern portion of the Town of Stouffville, which falls within the Humber River and Rouge River watersheds. TRCA is one of Ontario’s largest environmental organizations, dedicated to safeguarding and enhancing the natural environment across the Greater Toronto Area. TRCA works with municipalities, government agencies and communities to manage natural resources, protect biodiversity and promote sustainable development.

TRCA's Flood Management Program monitors water levels, weather patterns and watershed conditions, and collaborates with the Town to implement flood protection measures to reduce flood risks.

TRCA also offers the Town and residents a variety of programs and initiatives, including outdoor education, community outreach events and sustainable community planning.

Understanding Riverine Flooding

Riverine flooding occurs when water from a river or other body of water exceeds its banks, flooding the surrounding area. This is a natural process that happens when high water flow overtops the river channel within a valley system.

Flood Forecasting and Warning

Ontario Conservation Authorities issue flood messages as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program. Local Conservation Authority staff, monitor weather forecasts and watershed conditions on a continuous basis and issue flood messages when conditions warrant, as part of this program.
