Turtle Nest Protection

Turtle Nest Protection in Whitchurch-Stouffville

Each spring and summer, turtles travel across Whitchurch-Stouffville to lay their eggs. Many turtle species in Ontario are at risk, and nest protection plays an important role in helping young turtles survive.

The Town supports turtle conservation by helping to protect turtle nests found on public and private property.

What Is a Turtle Nest Protector?

A turtle nest protector is a simple wooden frame with wire mesh that is placed over a turtle nest. The protector allows sunlight and rain to reach the eggs while preventing predators such as raccoons and skunks from digging them up. Once the hatchlings emerge and leave the nest, the protector is removed.

What to Do If You Find Turtle Eggs

If residents notice turtle eggs or see a turtle nesting on their property or elsewhere in the community, they are encouraged not to disturb the area.

Instead, contact the Town’s By-law Services or Animal Services team. If appropriate, Town staff can arrange to have a turtle nest protector installed to help keep the nest safe until the eggs hatch.

More information about turtle nests and nest protection is available through Ontario Turtle Conservation at: https://ontarioturtle.ca/get-involved/turtle-nests-and-nest-protection/

Community Partnership Supporting Conservation

The Town’s Animal Services department has partnered with Stouffville District Secondary School (SDSS) to support this conservation effort. Students in the SDSS woodshop class build the turtle nest protectors used throughout the community, helping protect local wildlife while gaining hands-on learning experience.

This partnership highlights the importance of community involvement in protecting Whitchurch-Stouffville’s natural environment.
